“My wristwatch watches over me.”

I know it sounds funny until you realize just how true this is.

Some years ago, wristwatches were used to just tell time and date, and were another fashion piece.

No one thought about wristwatches beyond telling time and fashion.

Smartwatches used to be a thing of the distant future, the kind of things we see in sci-fi movies alongside flying cars, and no one would have imagined that a time would come when they would not just be another piece of fashion but a significant part of their lives and wellbeing.

They would probably have laughed if you had told someone their wristwatches could be a vital part of their lives and contribute to their health.

But today? A wristwatch can do so much more.

Wristwatches have evolved into smart devices that can do much more.

Smartwatches fall under the wearable technology category, and they have quietly transformed people’s lives and healthcare delivery.

Whether it’s tracking heart rate, detecting irregularities, or even calling for help in an emergency, these little devices are doing more than just sitting on our wrists; they’re changing the way people manage their health and making them feel safe.

So what exactly do they do?

Your ‘Padi’

“A close companion.”

Imagine going about your day, and your watch vibrates with an alert: “Your heart rate is higher than normal while at rest.” At first, you might brush it off, thinking it is because you were working. But then it happens again and again. Eventually, you decided to check in with your doctor, and it turns out that your stress levels were through the roof, and you hadn’t

even noticed.

For people with chronic conditions, these wearables are even more powerful.

Imagine being able to track your blood oxygen levels if you have respiratory issues or getting an alert when your heart rhythm is irregular.

Are you scared of needles and finger pricks? That’s ok because some smartwatches can monitor blood sugar levels without painful finger pricks. Ouch.

Gets You Involved In Your Health

The best part about wearable health technology isn’t just the data it collects; it’s what it helps you DO with that information.

It’s one thing to know your heart rate or step count; it’s another to do something with that information.

Smartwatches encourage you to move more, breathe deeply, and even seek medical help when something seems off.

Many of these devices now come with fall detection, which is especially helpful for older adults or people with conditions like epilepsy. If a hard fall is detected and the wearer doesn’t respond, the watch can call emergency services ASAP. This must be reassuring for the families and friends of people living alone with certain conditions.

This watch isn’t just a gadget for many patients—it’s peace of mind.

Knowing that a tiny piece of technology is watching out for them reminds them to check in with themselves and not ignore what their bodies are trying to say.

So yeah, it’s just a watch.

But I’ve never felt safer with it.
